Project:

Patty Griffin Limited Edition Concert Serigraphs

Role:

Creative Lead

Responsible for the Concept, Art Direction, Design, and Production Management

Brief:

A two-time grammy award winner and one of the most prolific and esteemed sing-songwriters of this generation, Patty Griffin’s concerts have become a highly sought-after experience for serious music fans. To commemorate special performances, Patty commissions artists and designers to create limited edition serigraphs (hand screen printed) posters for sale. I was approached to conceptualize, design, and manage production of three unique prints for special performances with Richard Thompson at Leon Helms Studios and her tour with Lee Ann Womack.

Process:

Since these limited edition serigraphs are purchased at the concert, they are meant to memorialize the event rather than market it. They are collectors items that are framed and treated as fine art in many homes. For each of these projects, I conceptualized each piece with the screen-printing medium and production methods driving the design. These posters are printed by hand in limited runs by those who specialize in serigraph printing often utilizing special inks and papers to achieve the desired goal.

Each color used requires a new screen and adds to the labor-intensive process. In order to keep the final costs manageable, it was important to design without the full range of color that CMYK and RGB offers. For the Patty Griffin and Lee Ann Womack tour, I utilized the ink’s opacity and the paper’s color (light blue) to add depth and dimension to the foggy mountain scene. For the Patty Griffin/Richard Thompson moon phase poster, we decided to do 4 different colorways, further extending the limited edition nature of the pieces, while utilizing one of the same screens with 4 different ink colors (and therefore limiting excess screen costs). In addition to conceptualizing and designing the art, I also coordinated the production for these prints in conjunction with Patty’s management and the small-batch print houses.
